WHY DID I WRITE THIS GUIDE?

TLDR: I wanted to create the guide I wish I had when I got started in photography.

When I purchased my first DSLR I just knew my pictures were going to be amazing, right out of the box. I was WRONG, soooo wrong! I quickly realized that there was a ton I did not know and the user manual was not giving me the answers!! I began searching for guidance everywhere. I purchased books, scrolled social media, found various ebooks, guides and videos that set me on my way to figure out my own style and find my voice in this industry.

While there are some commonalities and overlap in some of the technical aspects in the various genres of photography; there are definite differences that apply when considering food photography. The art and science of taking a good photo, is made more complicated when beginning to think about what actually makes a photo, good? When it comes to food photography this can mean, does the viewer want to eat or drink this picture? Can the viewer almost feel the texture in the photo? Can the viewer almost smell the photo? Is the yum factor adequately captured? Can the viewer imagine themselves in the scene/story? I think if you can stop a viewer in their tracks, make their mouth water while also telling a story that they can imagine being a part of then you've successfully created a good photo.

Over the years, I've learned so much from other amazing photographers and also have learned tremendously from my own trial and error. More recently I have found myself teaching concepts and sharing behind the scenes for many of my photoshoots and realized that others may find value in me sharing the things I am passionate about, and the techniques I use to create my images. This guide was born from a place of transparency and wanting to be helpful. I wanted to share everything from gear and settings to photography fundamentals and thought processes. Ultimately, I want to "pay it forward" to help the next new photographer, chef or food-prenure improve their images and ultimately earn more money!

How can better images make you more money?

Visualization works from a human perspective because we respond to and process visual data better than any other type of data. The human brain processes images 6x-600x faster than text, and 90 percent of information transmitted to the brain is visual. A study by researcher Satyendra Singh regarding color psychology states, “People make up their minds within 90 seconds of their initial interactions with either people or products. About 62‐90 percent of the assessment is based on colors alone." Which means, people will notice your images and form an opinion before reading your text.

We are visual creatures.

  • the highest metabolic activity in your body is in the retinal epithelium (back of the eye).

  • the retina itself is actually brain tissue.

90% of information transmitted to our brain is visual, with the remaining 10% divided between the rest of our senses. Our eyes are our primary way of consuming and understanding information. 16% of readers actually read word-for-word— 79% just skim for the photos and highlights. Good photos will make buyers and potential clients linger longer on your website or social media page.

Good images build trust with your audience, whether your goal is to get hired, sell food services or products, or simply share recipes. We live in a digital world driven by digital images. Using photos to tell your brand's stories is called visual storytelling marketing. Using images captures your audience’s attention, and creates a resonating message as well as an emotional connection.

Leveraging social media can boost visibility and sales by driving website traffic to your website. E-commerce has made it possible for the customers to shop around, compare, and buy all from little handheld devices. Strong images are key in this decision making process. Image size and quality matter quite a bit. Bigger images typically mean greater visibility, and deeper emotional connections.
